Ferrari 458 Italia: Under the Hood of the 458

The 458 Italia continues the great Ferrari tradition for high performance sports cars. The new rear mid mounted longitudinal V8 engine features dry sump lubrication, direct fuel injection (with split injection management) and variable valve timing for both the intake and the exhaust valves. In keeping with Ferrari engine traditions, the unit has flat plane crank (with an angle of 180 between crank and pins). The sensation of limitless acceleration typical of all Ferrari engines, due to a constantly climbing power curve, is intensified even further by the capability of revving up to 9000 RPM. This upward surge stops at 9200 Rpm, when the engines speed limiter steps in to halt the crescendo of revs power. Ferrari engineers have worked to minimize the high end torque loss typical of naturally aspirated engines, and even at maximum engine speed, over 80%of the maximum torque is still available.

The 458 Italia engine offers not just unrivaled performance, but also unrivaled fuel efficiency, with the best figures in the market for naturally aspirated engines. In spite of the increase in power, CO2 emissions are 11%lower than the F430 (-15% compared with the 430 Scuderia) and significantly lower than the Lamborghini Gallardo. Splitting the injection into two consecutive stages improves combustion efficiency, increasing torque at low engine speed by up to 5%. This makes the engine more tractable even in low load conditions. The variable geometry intake system uses three butterfly valves located inside a central communicating body to achieve four different configurations for maximum torque and power in all rev bands.

Pistons with patterned Grafal coating and reduced thickness piston rings, which ultimately reduce friction between the piston and the cylinder sleeve, limit consumption as well as increase performance. A special lapping process on the camshaft brings surface roughness down ti Ra values under 0.005, reducing the friction coefficient between the cam and the tappet. A special lapping process, surface heat treatment and coating in DLC (diamond like carbon) reduces the friction coefficient for improved performance and consumption. The exhaust system consist of two air-gap manifolds fitted to flexible elements and two metal matrix catalytic converters one per cylinder bank) leading into the two silencers. A secondary air system, integrated in the exhaust manifold flange, eliminates the need for a pre catalyzer, reducing back pressure and weight. The exhaust system complies with stringent Euro5 and LEV2 emissions regulations. The exhaust manifold is rendered independent of the catalytic converter by a flexible element.

As every Ferrari, the Ferrari 458 Italia and 458 Spider have a truly unique design approach and technology innovations to achieve indisputable performance and driving experience. Inquiry about the new 458 Italia at Ferrari Silicon Valley today.
